Roger Johnson is a Fellow of Birkbeck College, London University. For over 20 years he was Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at Birkbeck which includes the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems. He has spoken at many conferences and published numerous papers latterly on the history of computing and professionalism in IT.

He has worked for over 20 years to promote the importance of professionalism amongst IT practitioners. He has recently served as the Chair of IFIP's International Professional Practice Partnership (IP3). IP3 promotes awareness of the importance of IT to contemporary society and IT's ability to transform the lives of citizens worldwide. As part of this IP3 has established a set of criteria to accredit national computer society's schemes for certifying individual high quality IT practitioners. IP3's members societies have an aggregate membership of over 125,000 individuals worldwide.

He is a past President of the British Computer Society and of the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies. From 1999-2010 he was the Honorary Secretary of IFIP.
