Max Bramer has been Digital Professor of Information Technology at the University of Portsmouth since 1989 and was Head of the Department of Information Science from 1989-1997. Previous appointments include Lecturer in Computer Science, The Open University, Head of School of Computing and Information Technology, Thames Polytechnic (now University of Greenwich), Knowledge Engineering Programme Manager, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Bristol, Visiting Professor, Birkbeck College, University of London (1997-8), Visiting Fellow for EPSRC-funded project "Critical Systems and Data-Driven Technology", University of Exeter (2002-5), and Visiting Professor, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia (September 2010).

Max is leader of the University of Portsmouth's Artificial Intelligence Research Group. Research interests include data mining, case-based reasoning, model-based approaches to diagnostic reasoning and methodologies for knowledge engineering.

He is Chairman of SGAI, the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence, and involved in their many conferences, as well as the Nineteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-05), hosted by SGAI. He is Co-organiser of the annual British Computer Society Prize (competition) for Machine Intelligence, and a member of the General Assembly of the European Co-ordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence.

He was Chair of the IFIP Technical Committee 12 (Artificial Intelligence) 2003-9, Vice-chair 2009-present and UK Representative since 1998. Max was elected to the IFIP Board 2008-2011, is a member of the IFIP Publications Committee and was awarded the IFIP Silver Core 2010 for services to the Federation. For IFIP World Computer Congresses, he has been Joint Programme Chair for AIAI-2004 (The First IFIP Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations), and Programme Chair for IFIP AI-2006, IFIP AI-2008, and IFIP AI-2010 (Artificial Intelligence in Theory and Practice).

He is on the editorial board of Knowledge Based Systems (and guest editor of a special issue of the journal annually since 1998), Expert Systems: The Journal of Knowledge Engineering, and Springer 'IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology (IFIP AICT)' series, plus the review board of the Applied Intelligence journal. Max is author of textbooks Logic Programming with Prolog (Springer, 2005) and Principles of Data Mining (Springer, 2007).

He is a founding member of the International Steering Committee for the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Royal Society of Arts, and Higher Education Academy, Elected member of the British Computer Society's Council and formerly elected member of BCS Specialist Groups Executive Committee.
